A
perfect day for the Perfect Pitch DENVILLE - Even a nagging cold or the
light rain or the threat of even heavier rains couldn’t put a damper on Lisa
Pesci’s enthusiasm as she went about her chores of making sure the Perfect
Pitch Home Run Derby was just perfect.
The
event, in its third year, was held this past Sunday, June 6, at Gardner
Field here and drew almost 100 participants, the most of any year.
The event also raised close to $21,000, the most of any year.
The money will be distributed to the Special Scout Troop #364, the Morris
County Challenger Sports Program and at least one other charity that
supports disabled or disadvantaged children.
The competition was divided into four age groups with prizes and trophies
going to the top three finishers in each group.
Spencer Williams of Parsippany won the 13-14 age group with David Leininger
of Denville finishing in second place.
Devin Horvath of Parsippany won the 15-16 age group; Sean Cleary, a Morris
Catholic student from Long Valley, won the 17-18 group; and Mike Dittamo,
the baseball coach at Central Middle School in Parsippany, won the 19-over
age group.
Don Larsen, the New York Yankees’ Perfect Game Pitcher of World Series Fame,
was on hand to hand some of the awards, sign autographs and pose for
pictures.
Arthur Richman, the senior media advisor to George Steinbrenner of the
Yankees and the one many say is responsible for Steinbrenner’s hiring of Joe
Torre as Yankee manager, was also on hand, lending his support.
Pesci, in fact, turned the tables on Richman when, after announcing the
establishment of the Arthur Richman “Have a Heart Award,” that would go
annually to the person who went above and beyond the call of duty in helping
with the Home Run Derby, turned around and presented Richman with the first
award.
“I was a wonderful day and I can’t thank people enough for all the help and
support they gave us,” Pesci said. “The community of Denville and the
surrounding towns have been very supportive of this event.
“I can’t thank enough the Denville police, the Denville administrators, the
Morris County Police, John O’Dell who caught all day and Will Puentes who
pitched all day ... all these people and more who gave of themselves to make
the tourney a success and raise money for some disadvantaged kids.”
